Licenciado y doctor en Ciencias Biológicas por la Universidad de Granada, soy catedrático de Biodiversidad y Ecosistemas en la Universidad de Almería, donde he desarrollado mi trayectoria docente e investigadora. También he impartido docencia en cursos y másteres de la Universidad de Granada y de la Universidad Internacional de Andalucía. Desarrollo una amplia actividad docente en el ámbito de las ciencias ambientales, tanto en grado como en posgrado, vinculada a la conservación de la biodiversidad, al cambio global y a los sistemas socioecológicos. He dirigido 13 tesis doctorales y numerosos trabajos de fin de grado y de máster.

INVESTIGACIÓN

Mi investigación se centra en el funcionamiento de los ecosistemas como base para la conservación de la biodiversidad. He contribuido al desarrollo y aplicación de la teledetección para estudiar la respuesta de la vegetación a los controles ambientales desde perspectivas ecofisiológicas y ecohidrológicas. Este enfoque integra procesos ecológicos y dimensiones sociales, lo que permite analizar el papel de los ecosistemas en el bienestar humano y en la dinámica de los sistemas socioecológicos, especialmente en ambientes áridos y de montaña. He participado en y liderado proyectos nacionales e internacionales, realizando estancias de investigación en Argentina, Chile, Estados Unidos, Sudáfrica y Australia. Soy autor de más de un centenar de publicaciones científicas y mantengo un firme compromiso con la ciencia abierta. Lidero la Plataforma LTSER del Sureste Árido Ibérico (red LTER España) y he sido editor asociado de revistas internacionales como Ecological Solutions and Evidence, Frontiers in Plant Science y Land.

ECOLOGÍA TRASLACIONAL

Formo parte de los Consejos de Participación del Parque Nacional y Natural de Sierra Nevada y del Parque Natural Cabo de Gata-Níjar, así como del Comité Andaluz de Reservas de la Biosfera. Asesoro al Ministerio para la Transición Ecológica y a la Comisión Europea en el marco de la Directiva Hábitats y de la Red Natura 2000. También he liderado el sistema REMOTE de seguimiento ecológico de la Red de Parques Nacionales. Desde 2020 dirijo el Centro Andaluz para el Cambio Global – Hermelindo Castro (ENGLOBA) y el Campus de Excelencia Internacional en Cambio Global de la Universidad de Almería. Entre 2010 y 2020 coordiné el Programa de Doctorado en Ciencias Aplicadas al Medio Ambiente.
