María Jacoba Salinas Bonillo

I studied at the University of Granada. I have a degree and a PhD in Biological Sciences. I have been a full professor at the University of Granada, where I have done research on the biosystematics, conservation status and reproductive biology of endemic plant groups of the Mediterranean basin and on the ecological integrity of riparian ecosystems. I have also taught Botany, Mycology and Geobotany for Biologists. Since 2004 I am a full professor at the University of Almeria. I teach Flora, Vegetation and Global Change in the Degree in Environmental Sciences and Global Change and Impact Mitigation and Adaptive Management of Biodiversity in the Master in Sustainable Use of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Services.

RESEARCH

My research revolves around biodiversity conservation, from the species to the ecosystem level. I have participated and continue to participate in projects aimed at the analysis of the conservation status of endemic species, the integrity of ecosystems, especially riparian and semi-arid, and the detection and assessment of the impacts of invasive species in semi-arid environments. Lately my interests are directed towards the study of 1) the functional and physiological responses of phreatophytes in arid environments, to predict their behavior in the face of global change and 2) the relationships of the trophic nexus riparian vegetation-river community in headwater rivers. Another line that interests me is the development of protocols to improve the exchange of knowledge between natural environment managers and conservation scientists.
