MACHINERY AT WORK

During the summer months the jujube (Ziziphus lotus) comes out of its winter dormancy and using its deep roots (up to 60 meters) manages to access those soil levels where water is present.

This type of plants work as hydraulic pumps favoring the ascent of water to the most superficial layers. The increase in soil humidity, together with the shady environment generated by their leaves, facilitates the absorption of both water and nutrients by other accompanying plant species.
